September is Ovarian Cancer Awarness Month
The incidence of all types of cancer in women is 33%. Cancer of the ovary is a disease that affects one or both ovaries. One in seventy women will develop ovarian cancer. If cancer of the ovary is found and treated early, the cure rate is good. Patients whose cancer has not spread outside of the ovary have an 85-95% chance of living 5 years or longer after treatment.

A Patient Guide to Your Outpatient Surgery at The Toledo Clinic
Welcome to The Outpatient Surgery Center at The Toledo Clinic. Our facilities offer a more convenient, less expensive alternative for many procedures which do not require hospitalization.
Your physician has determined that your procedure can be safely performed on an outpatient basis. This means that hospitalization is not necessary and you will be able to return home.

Please take a few minutes to read this brochure to become familiar with our procedures, preparation for procedures, guidelines for family members, and suggestions for your recovery at home.

About The Toledo Clinic
More than 100 physicians in over 30 medical specialties have their medical practice at the Toledo Clinic. This multi-specialty medical center was established in 1926 to offer patients a convenient means of receiving quality health care.

Within The Toledo Clinic, we offer diagnostic radiology, laboratory, pharmacy and physical therapy. There are also satellite facilities located throughout the community.

Our Outpatient Surgery Facilities
The Outpatient Surgery Center is staffed by highly-skilled health care professionals. Working as a team, they perform more than 5,000 outpatient procedures each year.

Your experience in the Outpatient Surgery Center will include:

Admitting Area - In this area you will be prepared for your procedure. Blood pressure and other vital signs are recorded. Medications and IVs are started if indicated. Family members may remain with you at this time.
Operating Suites - There are six operating suites at The Toledo Clinic equipped with the latest medical technology. No family members are permitted to be in the operating rooms.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) - If you have received a general anesthetic, you will be in the PACU for a minimum of one hour. The length of recovery time may vary for each patient. Family members may join you, after you are awake.
Family Waiting Area - For the convenience and comfort of family members, coffee and tea is provided. Family members are asked to remain in this area until you are transferred to PA CU.
Family members are asked to notify a staff member if they temporarily leave the waiting area.
Please make babysitting arrangements for young children. Our Outpatient Surgery Center does not have a place for waiting children to play.
No Smoking Facility - No smoking is permitted within The Toledo Clinic and Outpatient Surgery Center.

Scheduling Your Surgery
The Outpatient Surgery Center is open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The physician's office personnel will schedule the time and date of your procedure. The day before your procedure, a Registered Nurse will attempt to reach you by phone to confirm your appointment. Please use this as an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about your procedure.

Before Your Surgery
As you prepare for your procedure please remember these basic guidelines:

Follow any specific instructions given to you by your physician to avoid having your procedure postponed or cancelled.
If you develop a cold, sore throat, cough or other symptoms of illness prior to your procedure, please notify your physician immediately.
Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages or smoking the night before, as well as the day of, your procedure.

The Day of Your Surgery
On the day of your procedure, please refer to this checklist before coming to The Toledo Clinic:

Bring a list of all medications you are currently taking, as well as any medications you are allergic to.
Wear clothing that can be easily changed and stored in a locker. You will be given a special gown to wear.
Do not wear nail polish or makeup.
Do wear your dentures if you have them. However, you may be asked to remove them.
